sportsAug 22, 202625559

Leo Rivas hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th, scoring Randy Arozarena to lift the Seattle Mariners to a 6-5 win over the Chicago Cubs. The single came off Cubs reliever Ryan Zeferjahn after Seattle had placed a ghost runner, Arozarena, on third. The victory finished a game that went extra innings in Seattle and gave the Mariners the series opener. Seattle announced top prospect Kade Anderson will get his first MLB start in game two, scheduled for 4:15 PM PST.

brendan donovan got drilled in the head in the batting cage right before the game, which led the mariners to put randy arozarena in the leadoff spot, which won them the game with a leadoff home run and a walkoff home run

My mom—via my father’s Alzheimer’s—has been in a deep state of depression for 10 years. The Mariners have been one of her few joys. Today is the first game she’s attended in that time.

Chat, I am tearing up a little bit. Leo Rivas, who has spent 10+ years in the minors in his career, walking this game off is just so magical. I am so happy for him. How can you not be romantic about baseball?

Randy becomes only the 7th player ever to hit a leadoff homer and a walkoff homer in the same game, and the walkoff sailed over the head of the last man to do it, Pete Crow-Armstrong. Randy also made a catch over the wall to rob a Chicago homer earlier in the game. #TridentsUp 🔱

In a game the Cubs led by three after the top of the first, they lose, 6-5, in 10 innings to the Mariners on Leo Rivas’ single to CF off Zeferjahn.
