Hull City stunned Manchester United 2-0 at the MKM Stadium in the Premier League season opener, with Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy scoring in the first half. Hull, widely tipped for relegation and described as heavy favourites to go down, defended with a rock-solid back three that largely neutered Michael Carrick’s attack. The opening goal came from a corner that found Ollie McBurnie whose shot was saved by Senne Lammens but the rebound fell to Semi Ajayi a few yards out and he slammed it in. The second arrived from a deep free kick played into the box at a perfect angle for Nobel Mendy to nick a touch that beat Lammens. Sergej Jakirović’s wing backs threatened consistently and Hull dominated second-ball moments, earning what CaughtOffside called the first big shock of the new Premier League season. Manchester United created few clear inroads and looked subdued in a defeat that hands Hull an eye-catching start to their campaign.
