Aston Villa approach Club Brugge for Joel Ordonez

Aston Villa have made a formal approach to Club Brugge to sign 22-year-old Ecuadorian centre-back Joel Ordoñez. Ordoñez joined Club Brugge in August 2022 after spells with Deportivo Azogues and Independiente del Valle and has 20 caps for Ecuador, including three appearances at this summer’s World Cup. The Athletic reported Ordoñez has been tracked by Villa and is one of three options to replace Ezri Konsa, who moved to Arsenal in a deal worth £51 million plus add-ons. Villa’s approach follows a rejected £18 million plus add-ons bid for Taylor Harwood-Bellis; Villa and Southampton remain apart on valuation and discussions are ongoing. The Athletic and other outlets say a permanent deal for Ordoñez would likely cost more than the Harwood-Bellis offer. Villa begin their Premier League season away to Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday.
