Max Verstappen crashed into the concrete barriers at the outside of Zandvoort's banked final corner on the opening lap of the Dutch Grand Prix, sending his car back across the track with a wheel detached and debris scattered. Verstappen, who had started seventh, climbed out of the car unassisted and told Red Bull over team radio "I'm OK." The impact and debris halted the race and prompted a red flag and a restart after an extra formation lap. The track was damp after rain ahead of the initial start; Audi junior Gabriel Bortoleto also spun behind Verstappen at the same corner while Nico Hulkenberg narrowly avoided contact. 2016 world champion Nico Rosberg told Sky Sports the crash looked like Verstappen put "a bit too much throttle down" and highlighted how tricky the conditions were. The incident marked the end of Verstappen's final home race at Zandvoort, a circuit that leaves the F1 calendar after this year's event.
