Shingles vaccine linked to lower risk of heart attack and stroke

A study led by Dr Maxime Taquet and published in Nature Medicine found that adults aged 60 and over who received the two-dose recombinant shingles vaccine Shingrix had a 12 percent lower risk of cardiovascular events including heart attacks, heart failure and stroke in the first three and a half years after vaccination compared with those who received the older live vaccine. Researchers analyzed health records for about 70,000 US adults and used the rapid 2017 switch from Zostavax to Shingrix to compare before-and-after risks rather than vaccinated versus unvaccinated groups. By the end of seven years of follow-up the association was a 4 percent lower risk of cardiovascular disease. The authors said the magnitude of the early benefit could be comparable to taking a daily blood pressure lowering medication. Several randomized trials are under way to test the finding more definitively. Investigators are exploring mechanisms including prevention of shingles itself, which may raise short-term cardiovascular risk, and broader immune effects that could suppress inflammatory proteins. If confirmed in trials, Taquet estimated vaccinating older adults could prevent hundreds of thousands of coronary heart disease cases, strokes and heart failure worldwide.

This could be huge, preventing hundreds of thousands of cases of heart disease and stroke.

There’s already research connecting the Shingrix vaccine to a significantly reduced risk of dementia. Now it looks like it might also significantly reduce risks of heart attacks and strokes. NHS it at 65 in the UK but you can pay privately & get it from age 50 www.theguardian.com/science/2026...

Fantastic news as data shows that shingles vaccine in older people is helping reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease! Shingles is reactivation of chickenpox so this data must also strengthen case for chicken pox vaccine in children (given with MMR as the MMRV vax)
