August's Full Sturgeon Moon will coincide with a deep partial lunar eclipse that night, producing heavy shadow across the lunar disk for observers in parts of North America and Europe. The Chicago Tribune reports the eclipse will begin over Chicago at 9:33 p.m. local time and reach maximum coverage at 11:13 p.m. local time. Observers in the eastern half of North America and South America can see the entire eclipse if skies are clear, while Scotland will see about 96 percent of the Moon in Earth’s shadow early Friday morning. Weather will affect viewing: Capital Weather warns strong storms could hamper eclipse visibility around Washington, D.C., and The Oregonian notes Oregonians may see a near-total eclipse and possibly auroras at the same time. The eclipse will be visible to the naked eye for hours before and after maximum, so timing and local cloud cover will determine how much of the event an individual sees. Photographers and skywatchers should plan around local sunset times and forecasted clouds for the best chance to observe the peak.
