Experts warn climate crisis may destabilise mountain glaciers
A massive glacier collapse triggered the deadly #Nepal #Tibet disaster. Some background: The glaciers in this #Langtang region have lost ~41% of their area since ~1815 - and the rate of loss has increased 4X since the 1970s - as these high elevations warm roughly 2X as fast as the global average 1/
Warming is the main driver, while pollution and soot can accelerate melting by darkening snow and ice. Scientists are still investigating the event to get more clarity on the chain of events. #glacier
How is it possible to be a climate change denier after watching those flooding videos? It’s apocalyptic.
I'm sure this won't be the last one..There will be many people who must move from an area for one reason or another with this climate change, however I never thought of glacier collapses being one..⏬
There are Kiwis online saying 'it was an earthquake' that triggered the collapse, not climate change. WRONG If that were the case NZ would have ZERO fucking glaciers left. Up to 1sq KM of ice fell hundreds of meters to the valley floor triggering the horrific unimaginably terrifying floods
The data is still out on weather a small quake triggered it, but the impact of 1sq km of collapsing glacier on the valley floor registered a 5.6 magnitude quake. But quakes alone don't destabilise glaciers - without climate change, this didn't happen - end of.
A RNZ article out today did as well – perhaps old copy carried forward. I gave a heads-up on Facebook, not that they’ll see it…
