Google updated Maps to display “Lake America” to users in the United States after President Donald Trump ordered the lake renamed, the company said. Google said the change follows its practice of using names from the U.S. Geographic Names Information System and that people using Maps in the U.S. will see “Lake America,” while users in Canada will continue to see “Lake Ontario,” and users outside the U.S. and Canada will see both names. The update arrived days after Trump’s order amid an escalating trade war between the United States and Canada that has produced billions of dollars in added tariffs, and follows a similar 2025 U.S. order that led Google to relabel the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America. Ontario Premier Doug Ford answered the renaming with a billboard-sized message on the Canadian shoreline reading “Lake Ontario. Now and Always.” The move prompted some users to shift to rival navigation apps; MapQuest rose to the top spot among navigation apps after Google’s change, according to reporting. Google said the updates are rolling out now; the White House, Canadian prime minister’s office, and Ford’s office did not immediately comment on Google’s decision.
