Leon Black sues House Oversight, refuses to testify in Epstein probe

Billionaire Leon Black sued the House Oversight Committee and its Republican chair Rep. James Comer in federal court to block two subpoenas related to the committee’s investigation of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and declined to appear for a scheduled sworn deposition Thursday. Black’s lawsuit argues the committee lacks authority because its actions do not serve a legitimate legislative purpose and describes the inquiry as a "public fishing expedition" aimed at scoring political points. The subpoenas seek testimony and copies of nondisclosure agreements Black says would reveal private identities and circumstances of women; his suit says he already produced the only confidentiality agreement executed while Epstein was alive. Black previously gave voluntary testimony to the panel in June but ended that appearance after Comer raised nondisclosure agreements, according to the filing. Comer called Black’s refusal to comply "unacceptable" and said the panel would consider holding Black in contempt; Rep. Robert Garcia, the committee’s ranking Democrat, also urged contempt and cited accusations by women against Black. An independent investigation commissioned by Apollo Global Management is cited in Black’s suit as finding he paid Epstein $158 million for tax, estate planning, and other legitimate activities.
