Richard Hughes, 47, has stepped down as Liverpool sporting director and is expected to join Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal. Hughes worked at Anfield for two and a half years after his March 2024 appointment and said he was proud to have served the club, thanking ownership, staff, players and fans. He picked Arne Slot as manager and oversaw a heavy recruitment drive, with Liverpool spending roughly £700 million on incomings during his tenure while recouping about £250 million in sales; signings during that period included Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, Bradley Barcola, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni. Links between Hughes and Al Hilal began last year, and Liverpool insiders say there was no question over his commitment as he continued to work through the summer window. Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon will lead the search for a successor as Liverpool look for a fourth sporting director in four years, with internal candidates Julian Ward, David Woodfine and Pedro Marques among those likely to be considered.
