Police slow to respond to Dover protest, says council boss

newsSep 6, 2026481,832

Hundreds of masked men chanting "stop the boats" blocked roads around the Port of Dover on Saturday, causing miles of tailbacks and preventing access to the ferry terminal, the blockade lasting from about 07:00 BST to 11:30. Kevin Mills, leader of Dover District Council, told the BBC the "exceptionally well organised" demonstrators "caught several agencies on the hoof" and said police "appeared to be quite slow" to keep roads and networks open. Kent Police described the event as a "spontaneous protest" and said officers made no arrests. The anti-hate group Hope Not Hate said the Patriot Platform network arranged the action, and far-right figures Tommy Robinson and Danny Thomas posted praise for those involved. Conservatives on the council said protesters had "loaded into rental vans" before travelling to Dover, and the council received complaints from Preston villagers about parked vehicles used by demonstrators. Business secretary Jonathan Reynolds condemned the intimidatory behaviour, saying officers "did deal with it swiftly" but that the protest was not peaceful; Mills said there "needs to be a wash-up" about the response.

On reflection I’m considerably angrier about the lack of response from the government to yesterday’s blockade of the port of Dover than the policing, though I am very worried by what looks like a massive intelligence failure. Sometimes “disperse then scoop them up later” is a reasonable choice. BUT

If Jonathan Reynolds's comments to Kuenssberg are anything to go by it could be that the Labour government's approach to the far right networks around the Dover protest is to portray them as a bunch of extremist fools and grifters.
