Monty Don to Step Down from Gardeners' World After 23 Years

Monty Don has announced he will step down as presenter of BBC Gardeners’ World at the end of the current series after 23 years on the programme. Don joined Gardeners’ World in 2003 and has presented around seven hundred programmes, hosting from Berryfields initially and, since 2011, from his Longmeadow garden in Herefordshire. He said the current series will be his last, that he values the connection with millions of viewers worldwide, and that he plans to continue working with the BBC on other projects while still gardening at Longmeadow. Kate Phillips, BBC Chief Content Officer, praised Don’s calming presence and influence on viewers’ gardening skills and confirmed he will present Gardeners’ World from Longmeadow until the end of the year. Sharon Fisher, BBC Studios Series Editor for Gardeners’ World, called Don’s contribution extraordinary and said his departure marks the end of a remarkable chapter for the programme.

This is sad but not unexpected news. I've always liked Monty as much for his willingness to express his dislikes and personal taste , too much gardening TV can "hello trees & hello flowers" discernment and passion & rarer. + his expression of joy at nature are richer tempered with his MH struggles.

Woah, big news. Have loved watching Gardeners' World in recent years. As I got into gardening during the worst years of the pandemic, the show was arguably at its height. People sending in videos from their lockdown gardens and so on. Really touching stuff. Monty has been a steady hand at the helm.

I've long held that Monty Don is one of the most influential people in the UK. If during 'Jobs for the Week' he invited viewers to pick up their pointiest garden tools and march on the seats of power he could be in charge by the next day.
