Athletics shut out Blue Jays, take series 2-0

In West Sacramento the Athletics beat the Toronto Blue Jays 2-0 on Wednesday, handing Toronto a shutout and winning the series opener at Sutter Health Park. Lefty Brady Basso and four relievers combined to hold the Blue Jays to six hits, with Oakland scoring in the third and fourth innings; Toronto threatened in the fifth but Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit into a 1-4-3 double play. Toronto dropped two of three in the September series and finished a nine-game road trip 5-4. The Blue Jays stood 73-74, 1 1/2 games behind Cleveland for the final American League Wild Card spot, though they could pick up half a game if the Guardians lost to the Orioles that evening. Oakland’s lineup remains depleted, original Nos. 1-5 batters Nick Kurtz, Shea Langeliers, Tyler Soderstrom, Brent Rooker and Jacob Wilson and Opening Day starter Luis Severino are on the injured list, yet the A’s have nonetheless won six of their past eight games. The loss cost Toronto a chance to gain ground against a team 30 games under .500 and left the Blue Jays’ Wild Card chase tighter heading into the final weeks.

Thankfully they quieted down a little after heckling Kirk that he was an unathletic meatball, followed by his RBI single. Hopefully they shut the fuck up the rest of the game.

Last night too. I started to listen for the obligatory USA or anti-Canadian chants and they really did seem to be doing the “distract a hitter while the pitch is thrown, look up his girlfriend’s name and shout about her” routine, to their credit.
