Liverpool recovered from an early Marcos Llorente opener to beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 at Anfield in their Champions League opener. Marcos Llorente put Atletico ahead in the 17th minute before Dominik Szoboszlai equalised just before halftime in the 40th minute. Ten minutes into the second half Alexis Mac Allister collected a loose ball on the edge of the box and hammered a left-footed, first-time finish past Jan Oblak to put Liverpool ahead. Bradley Barcola made his first Liverpool start but went off with a knock, prompting a double substitution that brought on Muñoz and Frimpong. The win came in Andoni Iraola’s Champions League debut as Liverpool’s head coach and the Reds have now scored two goals in each of their opening four matches, a sign of early attacking consistency as the squad gels.
