Patriot Day, 25th anniversary remembrance

On Patriot Day the United States observed the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks with flags at half-staff and memorial ceremonies honoring the 2,977 victims and the first responders, service members, and recovery workers who answered the call. Survivors, family members, and public figures shared personal recollections of where they were and whom they lost, while some posts urged unity and others criticized post-9/11 policies such as the Patriot Act and subsequent wars. Cultural remembrances included music tributes for first responders and a renewed sharing of Adam Zagajewski’s poem that ran in the New Yorker on Sept. 17, 2001. Voices also surfaced calling attention to ongoing consequences for Muslim travelers and civil liberties, and to the individual stories of victims such as Brian Sweeney, a passenger on United Flight 175 whose 9/11 voicemail to his wife was recalled. In the United States, Sept. 11 led directly to the creation of the Department of Homeland Security, the passing of the Patriot Act, the Authorization for Use of Military Force, the use of warrantless surveillance programs, and special registration of immigrants and foreign students from Muslim countries. Outside the United States, the attacks served as justification for the 20-year war in Afghanistan; the invasion and occupation of Iraq; the indefinite detention of prisoners at Guantánamo Bay; the use of torture at Abu Ghraib and elsewhere; the killing of thousands of U.S. and foreign service members; the periodic bombing of Pakistan, Yemen, Syria and Somalia; the deaths of some 800,000 people, including 335,000 civilians; and the displacement of an estimated 38 million people.

I will never 4get the fallen of that day or the 4ever war. We gave up privacy rights through Patriot Act, that was to sunset, but Congress renewed it instead. I believe it was an inside job to help get us here. I remember saying “look @ Colin Powell, he’s clearly not buying what he’s selling the UN”
