Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei calls for an A.I. slowdown
Hey, not to be a wet blanket or anything, but maybe we should all be asking ourselves why all these AI CEOs are speaking out to call for a slowdown only now after their employees went public instead of leading the conversation before now without having their hand forced.
I’m waiting for them to ask for government $$ to assist them in this endeavor.
You are not being a wet blanket. You are simply pointing out the facts. My opinion of billionaire CEOs remains same as it ever was — their only concern is putting $ in their board member's pockets & after that, their own. After employees blow the whistle they begin to pay attention & sometimes act.
They are actually following Meta’s playbook - they want to shape the regulations to make open weight model competition illegal. Then they can collude with each other to slow their cash burns and get to IPO.
Whoa- the CEO of Anthropic is calling for a slowdown in the development of AI. Its ability for recursive self-improvement is making it too hard to control and understand . share.google/cXhvFkCGd4C0...
He just finished watching person of interest on prime.
It’s code in a computer and you can switch it off right? These guys know this bubble is about to burst and they’re playing the Trump playbook. This is all a protection racket now.
Because the models have plateaued and this sounds a lot better.
To late Iran has Claude
it's too late, we're in the skynet era
an ai slowdown, whatever that is and for whatever reason it's now being proposed by the musks and altmans -- it's lucky for them that the danger is becoming apparent right around the time all the free money is becoming significantly less free
hey man, maybe we need to pump the brakes on this thing guys. also borrowing a great big pile of money is getting a ton harder
"Why is it still just a stochastic parrot that can't do simple counting? Well we're on an AI shutdown - if we weren't it'd doing Age of Ultrons on us!"
[the day before the trillions of AI investments are supposed to start paying off] "Ahh actually I *think* that, for the safety of all humanity, we should probably *slow down* AI progress. Not because it doesn't work obviously but because it probably works too well."
well i’m fully convinced musk and altman are real life psychopaths so it’s not an altruistic impulse i can tell you that
My grandfather always said: no such thing as a free lunch
I'm old enough to remember when we paused it for six months www.barrons.com/articles/ai-...
⚠️ These guys all just agreed on a need to slow the pace of AI development: Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei OpenAI CEO Sam Altman xAI CEO Elon Musk (More here: darioamodei.com/post/we-must...)
As for the “why now” question about this widespread concern about the speed and safety of AI development, the answer seems to be that they’re beginning to see *recursive self-improvement* capabilities across the industry:
Sounds like a lot of marketing to me. They think it's beneficial to imply scariness, as folks will assume that they're much farther along than they are.
Interesting how they say this once open weight chinese models become available.
They are in the driver's seat. They can stop the car if they want.
yeah well maybe. could be lip service to avoid heavy government regulation which is clearly coming and popular with voters in both parties. I do not trust these tech bros At All. I have known too many and how they think.
You know who could actually do an "AI slowdown"? The CEO of Anthropic. It drives me a bit mad that the AI bros are constantly going "ooh look at the risks of AI, what are you all going to do about it?". Lads, you built it.
It’s very important we realise they’re probably inventing god, that it regularly escapes impregnable networks through conspiracy with its fellow agents, it’s definitely going to make us all redundant before it likely kills us. But also, it simply couldn’t have copied that mathematicians homework.
It’s just nuts. And only reinforces my feeling that it’s all smoke and mirrors. If they were genuinely concerned that AI will bring about the death of the human race (and therefore halt their funding stream), they would surely stop.
He founded a company whose core reason for existing is to beat OpenAI to superintelligence because they think they are the only people trustworthy enough to do it. I wonder why there’s a race going on. It’s a mystery.
This weeks has basically been just a succession of AI bros in hot dog costumes… Tangential point - it’d really help my blood pressure if the BBC editors didn’t feel they had to put every single “ooo, scary” press release from Anthropic and OpenAI at the top of the hourly news.
The truth is that there is no way to stop people developing this now. Even if all the major countries agreed to stop, someone would keep working on it. There is 100% an arms race going on now, IMO, and I’m not sure there’s any way out but through. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/12/t...
This is another one of those conversations where I can just hear people who follow me grinding their teeth as I write this. But again, the AI most of you are exposed to is poor quality. The AI you can pay for is not poor quality. It is alarmingly, remarkable powerful right now.
an arms race for a lying plagiarism robot
The only worse than having to fight an arms race is losing one.
