Sam Altman says OpenAI IPO unlikely in 2026
Wall Street was poised for a massive OpenAI IPO by the end of the year—but the CEO says that’s not happening.
Probably has nothing to do with the top researchers leaving and spilling that they literally have no control over AI right now.
Oh god not another year of him promising that a wrathful, sentient AGI will destroy us all *and* create unlimited shareholder value
So what are they NOT telling us?
It's not happening because OpenAI is quite likely worth ZERO. Keeps losing market share to Anthropic, Google and more relevantly Chinese open factor models.
So, he doesn't want to split the bailout money with shareholders, gotcha
Oh yeah, let's invest in a company that is spending more money than it takes in, and there is no mechanism by which they can reverse that situation!
OpenAI will not go public in 2026, Sam Altman said as he raised safety concerns over artificial intelligence
Sure, safety concerns. Not their absolutely ridiculously bad financials.
Public documents would require disclosing that OpenAI is nothing but a paper tiger with cooked books.
"safety fears" Sure Sam, that's why
It definitely has nothing to do with his company losing $38 billion last year and key members of the C suite abandoning the ship right before they would otherwise be getting hundreds of millions to billions of dollars.
lol. Buying runway with the it’s too dangeous bull crap.
It's fucking hilarious anyone is buying this shit
iirc if they DON’T go public before the end of 2026 there are massive financial issues they’ll have to contend with, which means somehow those problems are preferable to the financial scrutiny of going public this is goddamn delicious
Hahahahahahahaha bubble is fucking REAL hahahahahaha
yeah right its because he still cant get eyebrows
Aham, sim, ESSE é o problema, não um monte de gente se demitindo de uma empresa que dá prejuízo. isaiprofitable.com
The company is totally financially ready to go public. They wanna ipo so bad because it would go great. It’s just too darn dangerous for humanity is the thing
If anyone is doubting that this whole "our AI is going to take over the world and kill everyone" spiel is a funding push, boy have I got a bridge to sell you.
Completely made up “safety concerns” about human extinction from AI CEOs. Completely detached from reality discourse about trans people by bigots. Complete erasure of the ongoing horrors in Palestine, Lebanon, and Iran by Zionists. On literally no issue are we having real, sober conversations
i know this isn't what happened, but in my fanfiction, Sam had a revelation (perhaps brought on by 3 visiting ghosts) that a governance structure of profit-motivated shareholders is fundamentally incompatible with high safety standards for products with potential for harm
I know stuff has been done harmfully but is there anything in the trajectory of the tech that actually justifies this? or is it just better sounding than "our model is a moneysink"
oh *that's* what this was about
Either frontier AI labs have created a doomsday scenario that we’re months away from (which they’ve been saying for years and we have little evidence of) or they’re wildly unprofitable and can no longer subsidize AI compute, which we actually have pretty good evidence of
Either is possible, but if I were a betting man I’d guess the closest thing to a doomsday scenario is the fact that these companies have been virtually the only growth vectors for the U.S. economy for some time and if/when a collapse comes, we’ll have to reckon with that
Ah. But what if you pulled some probabilities and utility values out of your ass and then multiplied them together? WOULD YOU BE SCARED THEN????
“Anthropic and OpenAI CEOs call for AI development to slow down, OpenAI to delay IPO” (I wonder what happened…👀) 9/12/26 … 1/
2/ This came first… bsky.app/profile/jenn...
openAI and Anthropic are only now realising that they are committed to spend / have spent way more than the total addressable market …
I was thinking the same thing. That head engineer who recently quit alluded to an extinction event so whatever they have seen gave them all pause. Unfortunately for the word, idiots elected precisely the wrong person to lead the world in these times. May God have mercy on our souls
They’re out of money and the models are regressing, apparently.
They can’t keep jerking us around without frequently changing directions.
OpenAI won’t go public in this year as the artificial intelligence company focuses on addressing safety-related concerns around the technology, Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman told Fortune in an interview. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...
Translation. The SEC wanted a reasonable page limit on the Risk Factors section and the underwriters and lawyers were running a billion words too long. Ok yes, I made that up.
... if the world still exists in 2027.
Translation: The hardware isn’t coming along and revenues suck
And also because it's a money pit.
What about this year’s planned IPO by Anthropic. Its CEO is publicly cautioning safety concerns about LLM AI. His sister is in charge of the firm’s safety initiates. Will Anthropic’s IPO be delayed? Will safety concerns significantly slow usage of AI by DoD?
There will be no public offering this year because it would get embarrassingly hammered.
Saying it would be an “ill-advised moment” given current AI safety concerns, Sam Altman announced that OpenAI is delaying its IPO and will not go public this year.
Also doesnt want to open his books up
I feel like @edzitron.com predicted this months ago...
Safety concerns? Sure Jan, that’s the reason…😹
He's delaying because he won't get the $1 trillion valuation OpenAI needs to even begin a path to profitability. The "safety" he worries about is that of his portfolio.
Sooooo.... the prospectus has some fibs.
In other words, "The attention on us is too much right now which will affect the valuation, so I'm going to buy time and pretend to cool down AI advanced agent research until we can go public in the following year."
The "safety concerns" are how investors will literally tear Altman to pieces once they actually learn how much money has been set on fire with no return in sight.
Translation: We effed ourselves good!
The awards campaign for ARTIFICIAL officially begins.
It also means they know there's no profit on the horizon, it's a money furnace, and they will be hounded to hell by index fund managers and people who lose their pensions.
They're screwed and I think he knows it.
I'd try to explain the many players in this grand house of cards, but it may be unnecessary. The simple answer is that if they don't go public, the US economy collapses. It's quicker and easier to say. Never mind if this stuff is good, dangerous, bad, humanity changing... It's gonna crash for awhile
"we can't go public until we're confident our product can kill everyone who points out the problems with our financials"
For god's sake, friends, if you have any investments in (or dependency upon) LMM AI, get out now. The crash is coming and it won't be pretty. bsky.app/profile/leah...
Doesn’t want to open the books cause they’re garbage
Not enough Capital for a $2T IPO to actually happen. SpaceX ate up more than half of all Capital allocated for this IPO season. So OpenAI & Antrhopic both don't want to IPO b/c whomever does first is going to not get SpaceX's IPO figure, and from there the entire market corrects at once.
And I'd been wondering how this circle gets squared w/o either of them going to IPO. This last week makes it clear to me that the plan was executed over the July to Now window. Set up all the check boxes on what keeps you on the right side of investor lawsuits.
It’s all about to meltdown anyway.
So it’s sorta like: the institutional investors had to be choosy as to which over-leveraged companies they propped up.
