Phil Foden sent off in Manchester Derby, VAR upholds red

Phil Foden was shown a straight red card in the 23rd minute of the Manchester derby at Old Trafford after kicking out at Bruno Fernandes, with referee Michael Oliver sending Foden down the tunnel. Replays appeared to show Fernandes kick Foden in the back first while Foden was on the ground, but Fernandes was not booked and the video assistant referee checked and confirmed the on-field red for violent conduct. Pundits were split: Wayne Rooney said "That can't be a red card," Danny Murphy noted Fernandes kicked first but called Foden's kick a red, and Paul Robinson called Foden's action "petulant" and unlikely to be overturned. Dale Johnson of BBC Sport explained the VAR/disciplinary guidance meant Fernandes's limited contact would likely be a yellow and therefore outside VAR's remit. Foden becomes only the second Manchester City player sent off in a Premier League Manchester derby since Bernardo Corradi in 2006. Manchester City held on to win 1-0, with Erling Haaland scoring the decisive goal despite City finishing the match with 10 men.

You conveniently forget to mention that Fernandes fouled Foden and then kicked him when he was on the ground. It should’ve been a red card for each player.

From the ref cam view, Michael Oliver doesn’t appear to see Bruno Fernandes deliberately kick Phil Foden in the back because his vision may have been obscured at the precise moment. So it’s a VAR failure, then. They’ve got to send him to the monitor to have a look at Bruno’s kick himself.
