Boston Legacy stuns Washington Spirit with three late goals, wins 3-0

sportsSep 13, 202620323

Boston Legacy beat the Washington Spirit 3-0 at Audi Field as Aïssata Traoré opened the scoring in the 81st minute and Amanda Gutierres, a substitute, struck twice in stoppage time. The Legacy controlled much of the match, creating the better chances in the first half with Sarah Schupansky and Bárbara Olivieri testing Spirit goalkeeper Sandy MacIver, who made several key saves. A potential Spirit penalty after a push on Mélissa Bethi was initially awarded by referee Nabil Bensalah but overturned following a VAR review. Traoré’s 81st-minute finish followed a loose sequence involving Nichelle Prince and Gabby Carle that left Traoré one-on-one with MacIver. Gutierres came off the bench and nearly made it 2-0 immediately before converting twice deep into stoppage time to seal the result. The loss was Washington’s worst performance and heaviest defeat of 2026, while the win gives Boston back-to-back road victories and keeps Traoré scoring in consecutive games. The result also tightens the NWSL Shield race, leaving the Spirit five points behind Gotham with six matches remaining.
