Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli won the Spanish Grand Prix at the Madring after McLaren's Lando Norris lost the lead because of the timing of a virtual safety car on lap 15. Norris had already passed the pit entry when the VSC was called, allowing Antonelli and Red Bull's Max Verstappen to pit and save time; Norris pitted a lap later but a seven-second stop dropped him to fifth. Antonelli held on for his eighth victory in 14 races, with Verstappen second and Norris recovering to third. George Russell finished fifth after a difficult, strategy-hit race, leaving Antonelli 81 points clear of Russell in the championship. Lewis Hamilton retired after six laps with brake failure and was classified 101 points behind Antonelli. Antonelli said it "doesn't feel as good because Lando deserved to win," while Norris said "We'll take it on the chin. There could be more wins this year."
