Winnipeg Jets suspend Connor Hellebuyck for missing training camp

The Winnipeg Jets suspended goaltender Connor Hellebuyck on Wednesday for failing to report to training camp, the team announced. Hellebuyck went public with a trade request in a post shared by his agent Ray Petkau on Aug. 27 and is entering the third year of a seven-year contract extension with an $8.5 million average annual value. General manager Kevin Cheveldayoff will address the media at 10:30 a.m. CT on Thursday. Hellebuyck criticized the Jets after missing the playoffs in an April exit interview and said in August that his goal is winning a Stanley Cup, casting doubt on staying in Winnipeg. If Hellebuyck remains suspended when the regular season begins he will forgo his $8.5 million salary and his contract will not count against the Jets’ salary cap. Multiple teams, including Buffalo, the New Jersey Devils, the Carolina Hurricanes and the Utah Mammoth, were believed to have expressed interest this summer but a trade does not appear imminent; the Jets signed Stuart Skinner to a two-year contract and will need another goaltender to share the crease, either via a Hellebuyck trade or the waiver wire as camp continues.

I believe the last NHL player to go on strike — refusing to report to the team he was under contract with — was Alexei Yashin, way back in the fall of 1999. That lasted a whole year. #NHLJets Connor Hellebuyck is on the cusp of becoming the first in 27 years.

Chevy is pretty much committed to waiting until something changes in the trade market to give him a decent trade return. I could see this dragging on until the trade deadline, or maybe even until next summer. At this point there aren't any teams motivated enough to acquire Hellebuyck.

Good summary of the situation, Ken. It sounds like teams have decided to test Chevy's resolve. Once it gets into the Fall, I expect that Chevy will be committed to wait until a trigger that changes trade offers. That might be an injury or a slow start, or it might take until the trade deadline.
