A failure in FAA communications systems grounded flights across major East Coast airports today after a fiber cable was accidentally cut at a construction site in New Jersey, Reuters reported. The outage knocked out a primary circuit and backup fiber serving the Philadelphia TRACON and forced ground stops at airports serving the New York region including JFK, LaGuardia, Newark and Teterboro, as well as Philadelphia and Boston Logan. FAA staff described the action as an "airspace sterilization to initiate equipment restart," and Reuters and NBC said the Philadelphia facility that controls traffic to Newark, Teterboro and Philadelphia lost a major circuit. The interruption produced widespread delays and cancellations affecting thousands of travelers and, according to a WFAA report cited in social posts, nearly 17,000 delay records were logged. The incident revived concerns about the FAA's aging air traffic control infrastructure and redundancy after backup systems failed. Social media posts singled out FAA leadership and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy for criticism as the United Nations General Assembly began with some 130 world leaders arriving in New York, a timing observers noted could worsen operational impact.

Listening to ATC chatter and it sounds like whatever the FAA is doing with this "airspace sterilization" requires *all* aircraft to exit the bravo airspace (I think?), even helicopters (I think?). This is absolutely wild. I have no idea if anything like that has happened before.
