Hackers say they stole thousands of FBI personnel records

The cybercriminal group ShinyHunters says it breached FBI systems and exfiltrated thousands of sensitive personnel records, including names, addresses, family information and applicant data. The group posted a message claiming to have data on “mostly all of FBI” and addressed the claim to Kash Patel and Brett Leatherman. Journalists from outlets including The New York Times and 404 Media examined samples the group provided, with one report saying a sample affected about 5,000 supposed FBI agents. The FBI said it is aware of the claims, that it is investigating a possible breach of its jobs portal, and that it is probing the matter. Security reporters and Politico warned the leak, if confirmed, could pose major risks to agent safety and counterintelligence, and noted the episode would be another in a string of recent FBI cybersecurity failures. For now investigators are analyzing the samples and the bureau’s inquiry will determine whether the data are genuine, how extensive any compromise is, and what remedial steps follow.

The hacker group is called ShinyHunters. Apparently they were retaliating for an FBI bulletin on the group's extortion tactics. They got data on employers and all the applicants, too. I wonder if they know which ones are sleeping with goats?

Back in the day confidential records of government agencies were maintained in paper files at a secure, guarded site. If someone wanted to steal personnel records they would have to get a truck, break into the site and load up. Nowadays AI can hack any database. Which system is safer?

I have dug into some of the sample with open source info and previously compromised data. It shows people in this FBI breach are U.S DOJ personnel www.404media.co/we-hacked-th...

The representative provided 404 Media with a sample appearing to contain the personal data of 5,000 FBI employees. That data included an alleged address, phone number, date of birth, and in some cases details on their spouse.
404 Media put some of the sample phone numbers into open source intelligence tool OSINT Industries and found they did correspond to people with the same name as listed in the sample file. 404 Media also searched some of the records through compromised data tool Darkside, made by cybersecurity company District 4. That revealed some of the phone numbers are associated with U.S. Department of Justice personnel.
