Dodgers activate Shohei Ohtani, option Josue De Paula to Triple-A

The Los Angeles Dodgers activated Shohei Ohtani off the 15-day injured list ahead of Wednesday's game against the San Diego Padres and will use him as the team's designated hitter in the five remaining regular-season games. To open a roster spot, the Dodgers optioned top prospect Josue De Paula to Triple-A Oklahoma City; De Paula remains eligible for the postseason with the earliest activation date of October 3, Game 1 of the NLDS. The club also activated Tarik Skubal off the bereavement list and optioned Kyle Hurt. Ohtani returns after the minimum IL stint following knee, biceps and neck issues that Dodgers hitting coach Aaron Bates said had previously left him "extremely compromised." Manager Dave Roberts said Ohtani "if he was a 5 before the IL stint, he's probably an 8 or a 9 right now." This season Ohtani is hitting .277 with 30 home runs, 80 RBIs and a .902 OPS; he was 2-for-26 with a .327 OPS in his last seven games before the IL. Across 11 big-league games this year, De Paula hit .323 with one home run, seven RBIs, a .500 on-base percentage and a 1.081 OPS, and the Dodgers indicated he will remain under consideration for a postseason roster spot.

Josue De Paula was just called up 11 days ago and might end up with more walks than a hitter who qualifies for the batting title: De Paula has 10 unintentional walks in 38 PA this year. Andrés Giménez has 14 unintentional walks in 496 PA this year.
