Dolly Parton Day, communities mark 9/25 with parades and book drives

Friday, Sept. 25 was celebrated as Dolly Parton Day across the United States with parades, pink lighting, book drives and other local events honoring the late country star, who died Aug. 25 at age 80. California on Sept. 20 passed a law establishing Sept. 25 as an annual Dolly Parton Day; Ohio’s governor and lieutenant governor issued a proclamation recognizing the date for 2026. Legislators in New York and Pennsylvania have introduced bills that remain in committee as of Sept. 24. Musicians On Call staged Dolly Parton, inspired performances at hospitals in Nashville, central Tennessee, Denver, Chicago, New York City and other cities. Nashville encouraged residents to wear pink, play "9 to 5" at 5 p.m., and held fireworks at 9:25 p.m.; Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood hosted "Dolly Day" at Friends in Low Places with all Friday proceeds directed to Parton’s Imagination Library. Imagination Library, the free book-gifting program Parton founded in 1995, was a focus of many local drives and donations on 9-25.
