George Russell takes commanding pole at Azerbaijan Grand Prix

George Russell took pole position for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku after topping Friday qualifying, outpacing Charles Leclerc and Oscar Piastri by 0.837 seconds. Russell said it was probably the biggest pole margin of his career, and the result marks the 12th pole of his career. The event was the 15th round of the 23-race season and the race will start Saturday in Baku. Mercedes team-mate and championship leader Kimi Antonelli crashed in Q1 and will start 16th after failing to set a representative time. Russell’s dominant lap left Leclerc second and Piastri third, putting Russell on the front row to lead Saturday’s Grand Prix and leaving Mercedes with a compromised starting position for Antonelli.

That was the lap of his life 👏🏼 Baku is the perfect circuit to combat the effects of his lower powered engine against Kimi's. Mercedes don't want Russell to be world champion, they need a heel to make their prodigy look even better and therefore more marketable.
