Platforms reject paid ads for Alex Gibney’s 'Musk' documentary

moviesSep 26, 2026284,212

YouTube, TikTok and Meta refused paid trailer ads for Alex Gibney’s documentary Musk, telling distributor Bleecker Street the spot contains “political” content; X declined to take Bleecker Street’s calls. Musk is a four-hour, two-part journalistic film that premiered at the Venice Film Festival and opens in U.S. theaters October 9; Bleecker Street says it is appealing the ad rejections and scrambling to find alternatives. Director Alex Gibney frames the film as a reappraisal of Elon Musk that calls him a 21st-century confidence man and uses Musk’s own words and imagery to argue his achievements involve illusion and misdirection. The film has been characterized in press and sample posts as a skeptical, exposé-style portrayal that Musk has called a “hit piece” and a “psy op.” Universal has said it remains committed to releasing the film overseas, though international dates have not been set. The ad refusals have pushed promoters and supporters to share the trailer and urge earned publicity and theater attendance for the October opening.

Facebook really doesn't want you to see the new documentary exposing Elon Musk Neither do TikTok or Google or the eX social media site. Since they won't accept paid advertising, let's do some free advertising. Go see Musk in theaters October 9 www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/dig...

#FreeSpeech News Hollywood Reporter reporting that YouTube, TikTok and Meta platforms are refusing to take even paid ads for Alex Gibney's documentary which takes a, let's say, sceptical and questioning view of Elon Musk's career, personality and alleged achievements. "Musk" opens on 9 October.
