Werwulf trailer debuts, Robert Eggers’ medieval werewolf film set for Christmas Day

Universal and Focus Features released a haunting trailer for Robert Eggers’ Werwulf, a medieval werewolf film set in bleak, mystical England that opens in U.S. cinemas on December 25 and in the U.K. on New Year’s Day. The black-and-white, washed-out footage leans into Eggers’ trademark historical authenticity and gruesome detail, with much of the dialogue rendered in Middle English that Eggers says he balanced for relatability. Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as a farmer afflicted by the werewolf curse, Lily-Rose Depp plays his wife, Bodhi Rae Breathnach is their daughter, Willem Dafoe appears as a seasoned wildlife hunter, and Ralph Ineson also returns in the ensemble. Eggers co-wrote Werwulf with Sjón and is producing alongside Focus Features and Universal; Chris and Eleanor Columbus serve as executive producers. Historical advisor Lorris Chevalier said Eggers showed him 12 minutes and that the footage left him having nightmares, underscoring the film’s intense, old-school horror ambitions.
