Red Sox activate Tanner Houck; Tyron Guerrero and Mickey Gasper placed on IL

The Boston Red Sox reinstated right-hander Tanner Houck from the 60-day injured list and will have him start Sunday’s regular-season finale at Tropicana Field against the Chicago Cubs after he missed the season recovering from Tommy John surgery. The club placed reliever Tyron Guerrero on the 15-day injured list with a right shoulder strain; Guerrero will not be eligible to return until October 9, which keeps him out through at least the American League Division Series. Catcher Mickey Gasper was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right biceps strain. Boston also transferred outfielder Eli White to the 60-day injured list, optioned right-hander Jedixson Paez, and recalled outfielder Nate Eaton and right-hander Wyatt Olds. Guerrero had just been activated last Sunday after a 17-game absence for right shoulder inflammation and appeared in two scoreless innings this past week, but he evidently suffered a setback. With Guerrero sidelined and Justin Slaten already out, the Red Sox bullpen will enter October without two of their primary set-up men behind Aroldis Chapman and Garrett Whitlock. Willson Contreras returned to the lineup as the designated hitter and will bat third in the finale after being hit on the right hand by a pitch on Sept. 17 and expressing concern about his Wild Card Series availability.
