Like, 85-95% of the people you see walking around that look really intimidating and dripped out from head to toe in BiS gear would drop what they're doing to help you with a menial task or answer a question
Permanent key items are more important than gear - their benefits last forever and take up no inventory space.
Don't be afraid to ask for help in-game. Active players WILL come find you and help you navigate if you get lost or help you with a boss fight if it's giving you trouble. You will get advice and encouragement from strangers in FFXI like no other MMO can provide.
The game is well over 2 decades old, its janky, it has a learning curve shaped like a brick wall, and a lot of the character of the game comes from it being an unbalanced dumpster fire. Saying that, FFXI is something you only get to enjoy for the first time once. Have fun, take your time.
when starting as a caster: if you need to buy a spell scroll, compare its price across the auction house and npc vendors. filling out your spell list can be really pricy, so you've gotta be frugal wherever you can also turn on your buff timers!!! config > misc. 3 > status icons > timer display on
level red mage so you can sneak/invis yourself. it'll save you money for your expensive teleports. plus you get a cool hat once you start doing your artifact quests. y'all love cool hats.
Always check all your inventories for the key item you need if it doesn't seem to drop!!! Don't waste your time like a lot of us did!
THE MOOGLES THAT STORE YOUR CRYSTALS FOR U!!! USE THEM!!!!!! DON'T STUFF CRYSTALS IN UR STORAGE
Take your time going through settings. So many options are there. "I wish I could... "...see how long my buffs last" "...scan the chat easier" "...make the UI was bigger" "...rebind my keyboard/controller" "...filter spam without filtering a whole chat" THERE'S SETTINGS FOR THOSE!!! AND MORE!!
There's an Artisan Moogle just outside of the Mog House entrance in Ru'lude Gardens that gives you one free Scroll of Instant Warp a day, good for doubling up with your Warp Ring to get around quickly *especially* when doing early questing that requires you go to back and forth between places a lot
Mine is: level THF!! I put it off for so long, but THF has a job trait called treasure hunter that can increase the drop rate for items. Sometimes drop rates for quest-required items can be very low, so save yourself a bit of heart burn.
-Mog slips -Lockstyle system -Trust: Grab Shantotto II when she's in Log in campaign -Dont feel bad opening wiki pages as you go progress -If you have a controller, the game gets easier to navigate -Sneak + Invisible -But most of all: Dont be afraid to ask for help
I am not an MMO Freak by any stretch of the imagination, but Final Fantasy XI is now and forever my favorite video game on this godforsaken planet. If Marathon had kept on in the mold of early S1 it might have had a shot at dethroning FFXI but alas
The only thing I don't like about FFXI is the math on how much I've spent on it keeping an account since spring of 2004. 😭
some day i really gotta try to find my old serial keys so i can try to get support to recover either of my original accounts that are tied to long-dead emails and in my dead name lmao
