Avengers: Endgame reclaims highest-grossing film title after Encore re-release

Avengers: Endgame has reclaimed the all-time unadjusted global box-office crown after the Encore re-release pushed its lifetime gross to $2.925 billion, surpassing Avatar's $2,923,710,708. The Encore run was timed to build hype for December's Avengers: Doomsday and included promised exclusive new footage, with the Russo Brothers labeling Endgame required viewing before Doomsday. Endgame originally opened to about $1.2 billion worldwide in 2019 and had previously overtaken Avatar with a $2.79 billion total before Avatar briefly regained the top spot after a re-release. Both Endgame and Avatar have held the number one position twice, and Disney now controls both titles following its 2019 acquisition of Fox. James Cameron publicly congratulated Endgame when it first beat Avatar, and the articles note Avatar could retake the crown if Disney mounts another global re-release around its anniversary. For now, Endgame stands as the highest-grossing movie ever, unadjusted for inflation.
