Dennis Hastert dies at 84, remembered for child sexual abuse scandal

newsOct 5, 2026294,658

Dennis Hastert, the longest-serving Republican Speaker of the U.S. House, died at 84. In 2016 he admitted in federal court that he had sexually abused teenage boys he coached decades earlier and apologized at his sentencing, saying "What I did was wrong and I regret it." A federal judge called Hastert "a serial child molester." Prosecutors did not charge him with sex-related crimes because statutes of limitations had expired; he was prosecuted in a hush money case, sentenced to 15 months and served about 13 months before his 2017 release. Hastert was a registered sex offender and was described in coverage as the highest-ranking U.S. official to serve jail time. Commenters noted his death will rekindle attention to how current Republican leaders address his legacy.

Truly incredible that this is how the media is choosing to eulogize the longest-serving Republican Speaker of the House in US history, who was a serial sexual abuser of children. For all the talk about "deep state" plots to abuse children, no one even remembers this case.

From CBS News: "Former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, who represented Illinois for two decades in Congress and was later jailed for violating banking laws, has died."

It sounds weird, but politicians who violated 'banking laws' were once considered 'disgraced'. No becoming president, no running key House committees, no pardons, if you were caught violating 'banking laws' your career was over and the headlines would call you 'disgraced.' I wonder what changed.

Dennis Hastert? The former House Speaker who was jailed for violating banking laws?

In a way, it's useful to be reminded that Hastert's abuses became known b/c the W Bush-era FBI noticed he was "violating banking laws." Is there any chance that if Kash Patel's FBI spotted Mike Johnson or another Trump loyalist rep making fishy transactions that they would follow that lead?

Ryan Godfrey7

Okay but "the media" here is David Ellison and Bari Weiss.

Ever wonder how an elite cabal of pedophiles operated with impunity while increasing their power and influence for decades? Bari Weiss is an avatar for it.

Angry goose meme asks Jailed for violating banking laws for which purpose, CBS?!

GregSergienko4

Yes. For those not around then, the "violating banking laws" that CBS mentions happened because he was paying large amounts of cash to cover up his sex crimes against children.
