Caleb Flynn, 40, a former American Idol contestant and ex-music pastor, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after a jury convicted him of murdering his wife, 37-year-old Ashley Flynn, in February and of eight additional charges including aggravated murder and tampering with evidence. The jury rejected Flynn's claim that an intruder entered the Tipp City, Ohio, home and fatally shot Ashley while the couple's two children, ages 9 and 11, slept. Sentencing hearing testimony included letters from the daughters asking Flynn to admit guilt and describing the harm to their family and faith; Flynn sobbed as the letters were read and again denied killing his wife while apologizing for unspecified "decisions." Prosecutors presented police body camera footage and activity from Flynn's iPhone and Apple Watch around the time of the killing, incriminating text messages to his former mistress Alleigha Botner, and AI-generated songs prosecutors said Flynn made for her. Courtroom excerpts of the messages included Flynn writing "I was up until 4am last night crying, literally thinking of ways to kill her and not go to jail" and "I just want her dead and gone." Judge Jeannine Pratt described Flynn as an extreme risk to the public when imposing the sentence. Flynn did not testify at trial, his defense called no witnesses, and his lawyer Patrick Mulligan said he plans to file a notice of appeal, arguing insufficient evidence of prior calculation and design.
