Max Verstappen takes sprint pole in Singapore, faces probe

sportsOct 9, 202651108

Max Verstappen set the fastest lap in Singapore sprint qualifying, claiming sprint pole with a 1:31.156 at the Marina Bay Street Circuit, just over a tenth quicker than George Russell. Charles Leclerc was third, followed by Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, while Lewis Hamilton finished sixth; the official top 10 also included Kimi Antonelli, Liam Lawson, Isack Hadjar and Pierre Gasly. Verstappen’s pole is under investigation after he passed Hamilton on track during SQ1 while yellow flags were displayed; Hamilton reported the move over team radio and the stewards opened a probe that could trigger a penalty. The session featured a red flag when Sergio Perez crashed and left debris on track, and a separate timing-system fault that delayed SQ2 before its order was corrected. Red Bull had made precautionary changes to Verstappen’s RB22 after he experienced an ERS issue before qualifying. The stewards are reviewing telemetry and video from SQ1; if officials find a yellow-flag infringement, the sprint grid could be reshuffled with Russell promoted to pole.
