President Donald Trump on Friday exempted a handful of Canadian products from the 50% tariffs he had imposed, removing duties on items used by Maine agriculture and forestry including plywood sheets, packing crates, certain machinery, refrigeration products and packaging, according to documents posted on the White House website. The move was explicitly tied to helping Maine Sen. Susan Collins and other Republicans ahead of the midterm elections. At the same time the administration said it will impose 50% tariffs on other Canadian goods, notably carpet, certain valves and waste products. One article reporting the decision said the change could take effect as soon as Friday and that the administration has in prior cases swapped some 50% tariffs for others. The exemptions give Collins a policy action to tout in the closing days of her campaign while leaving broader tariff exposure on other sectors and Canadian trade partners intact.
