Report: Ken Paxton blind trust invested $600,000 in convicted fraudster’s company

Four years after North Texas home builder Scott Sherman completed a federal prison sentence for mortgage fraud, a blind trust tied to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and his wife Angela gave a $600,000 cash infusion to Sherman’s company, Wildcatter Sand Services and affiliated Grayson County Sand and Gravel. Previously unreleased records from Paxton’s 2023 impeachment probe show the trust did not fully shield the Paxtons from those dealings and the investment had not been publicly reported. As Wildcatter grew into a multi-location enterprise, some subsidiaries accrued tax debts to local governments; meanwhile Wildcatter companies wired the Paxtons tens of thousands of dollars in the months leading up to and during Paxton’s 2023 impeachment on corruption and bribery charges. Paxton was acquitted by the Legislature and is now running for the U.S. Senate against Democrat James Talarico. Paxton has defended his ethics and said he follows the law, writing last year, "In Texas, we fight fraud head-on and will not rest until every last corrupt actor is brought to justice." Richard Painter, who served as chief ethics lawyer for President George W. Bush, said he would have expected the attorney general not to be dealing with a convicted felon.

"Lord, we pray that you lift up Ken Paxton, a serial adulterer who constantly bears false witness, covets material things-- like houses--and disgraces your holy name with his shameless corruption, so that we may continue not to pay taxes and hate all the same people he does. Glory!"
