Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva defeated far-right senator Flávio Bolsonaro in Brazil’s runoff, winning a fourth nonconsecutive presidential term with about 51.8 percent of the vote as officials reported a roughly 4.4 million-vote margin after 100 percent of ballots were counted. Brazil’s electoral court declared Lula’s lead unassailable and news coverage said he was preparing to speak in São Paulo following the victory. Flávio Bolsonaro said he would not concede and said his legal team would seek to have the election annulled. Regional leaders including Paraguay, Bolivia and Cuba issued congratulations to Lula, Reuters reported. At nearly 81 years old, Lula reclaims the presidency amid a split national government, and analysts noted a conservative Congress will test his mandate going forward.
