Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was reelected president of Brazil, winning the runoff roughly 51.8% to 48.2% and securing a fourth nonconsecutive term. Senator Flávio Bolsonaro said he will not accept the result and announced plans to mount a legal challenge, saying "It is impossible to recognize the election result given how these events unfolded" and that his team will ask for the election to be annulled. Voting was extended by two hours after a last-minute Brazilian Supreme Court order from Justice Cristiano Zanin, a move both campaigns had requested; Lula’s campaign cited bus disruptions to polling stations while Bolsonaro’s campaign cited heavy rain. Bolsonaro trailed Lula by about 4.4 million votes in the final count, reversing an earlier first-round result in which Bolsonaro had led by 2.2 million votes. Lula, 80, celebrated supporters in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte and framed the win as a mandate to change governance and broaden youth participation. The result keeps Brazil oriented toward a more independent foreign policy under Lula, reinforcing ties with the Global South and China rather than aligning with the US administration. Bolsonaro’s announced legal challenge is the immediate next development and could trigger court review of the extended voting hours and other election-day incidents.
