Alberta rejects Elections Alberta's request to delay vote or freeze boundaries
Perhaps an unpopular view but I think that Elections Alberta should have been silent on this. Better to remain entirely non-partisan. Yes, we can anticipate litigation if we see the gerrymander report we expect tomorrow. But let's just wait. #ableg #abpoli www.thealbertan.com/alberta-news...
This entire episode, including the Alberta Minister of Justice's response, may be pointing to a deeply dysfunctional relationship between the Alberta UCP government and the province's chief electoral officer. This level of chaos does not exist in a proper democracy.
I think they had to provide warnings about the limits of their capabilities if the UCP intends to push this through. That's not partisan.
This was not partisan, it is the professional public service doing its job - evaluating the facts and providing advice to the politicians. The partisan act was the Premier posting the Amery's letter on social media.
Someone needed to say there was a potential issue. Nenshi shouod have outlined the potential issue but really the UCP have made things difficult for Ekections Alberta (vote tabulators as an example) and expect them to meet targets. If public servants do not speak up they have to leak the info.
