JB Pritzker wins third term as Illinois governor

politicsNov 3, 2026242,069

Democrat JB Pritzker defeated Republican Darren Bailey to win a third term as Illinois governor, NBC News projected Tuesday. Vote totals reported in state returns showed Pritzker with about 219,916 votes, or 68.3 percent, to Bailey’s roughly 91,703 votes, or 28.5 percent. The race was a rematch between Pritzker and former state lawmaker Darren Bailey, and multiple outlets including the Associated Press and Chicago Tribune called Pritzker the winner. Pritzker’s victory gives him another four-year term as Illinois governor, marking a rare third term for an incumbent in the state.

JB Pritzker was elected to a third term as Illinois governor Tuesday, handily defeating Darren Bailey, whose poorly funded rematch was unable to escape the forces behind his loss four years ago — his support for President Donald Trump and his conservative Christian views on social issues.

Pritzker’s reelection, which was called by The Associated Press just after polls closed, now sets the stage for the next possible progression of the Democratic billionaire and entrepreneur’s political career — a run for the 2028 nomination for the White House.
