Democrat James Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton in the Texas U.S. Senate race, NBC News projects. The Talarico win is one of seven Senate pickups for Democrats this cycle, joining flips in Iowa, Kansas, Ohio, Maine, North Carolina and South Carolina. NBC News projects Democrats will take control of both the House and the Senate in January; an NBC analysis shows Democrats winning at least 252 House seats, above the 218 needed for a majority. Democrats also flipped governor races in Texas, Georgia, Ohio and Iowa, NBC reports. NBC News exit polls showed President Donald Trump’s disapproval at 62 percent, more than three quarters of voters disapproving of Congress and nearly half of voters saying they viewed the election as an opportunity to rebuke Trump. With these results, Democrats will assume unified control of Congress in January and take the majority roles that determine committee chairs, legislative agendas and oversight authority.
