Hakeem Jeffries poised to become Speaker of the House

Democrats won control of the House in the midterm elections, putting House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries on track to become the first Black speaker in U.S. history. Speaking to supporters in Washington, D.C., Jeffries declared "America is back" and said Democrats will pursue "transformational change" on affordability, including affordable housing, education, healthcare and retirement benefits when they take control in January. Jeffries credited voters with rejecting political extremism and corruption and said Democrats had overcome being outspent by Republicans in many races. The results end Republican control of the lower chamber and reduce President Trump’s ability to set the congressional agenda, though Trump retains veto power that could block major Democratic proposals. House Speaker Mike Johnson acknowledged the losses, saying he "left it all on the field" while defending Republican efforts to hold the majority. Democrats face an uphill fight enacting ambitious legislation once in power, with likely clashes with the White House and the practical challenge of advancing priority bills next year.
