First lady Melania Trump hosted representatives from Russia and Ukraine at the White House on Thursday to discuss the six-day humanitarian ceasefire around Oleshky that began Oct. 27. The limited truce allowed the evacuation of hundreds of people trapped by fighting, blockades and minefields via neighboring Belarus and was the largest de-escalation effort since the war began, officials said. Kirill Dmitriev, described as Vladimir Putin’s special envoy, attended and thanked Melania Trump on behalf of the Russian leader, and Ukraine’s David Arakhamia urged her to keep pushing the mission. Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine’s parliamentary commissioner for human rights, presented Melania Trump with Ukraine’s Order of Princess Olga, 1st Class. Melania Trump handed Dmitriev and Arakhamia personal letters to deliver to Putin and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The meeting was billed as the first time both sides met face-to-face at the White House and came ahead of U.S.-led trilateral talks with Russia and Ukraine scheduled next week in the United Arab Emirates.
