Federal panel approves Trump's 250-foot memorial arch amid lawsuits

newsNov 6, 2026204,967

The National Capital Planning Commission voted 8 to 4 to approve President Donald Trump’s proposed 250-foot memorial arch near downtown Washington, clearing a major administrative hurdle for the project. The Commission of Fine Arts separately approved early designs for the arch, which at 250 feet would be about twice the height of the Lincoln Memorial. Legal challenges are still pending and federal permits remain unresolved; U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan issued a temporary order blocking any construction‑related activity for 14 days while litigation proceeds. Critics and some officials have argued the project lacks congressional authorization; D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson said a century-old congressional plan envisioned a different treatment, namely a pair of columns symbolizing reunification. The administration signaled readiness to begin construction after the commission vote, but the court order and ongoing permit reviews now determine whether work can start.
