Angie Nixon says she will run again for Senate

Angie Nixon announced she will run again for the U.S. Senate after narrowly losing a Florida special election to appointed Sen. Ashley Moody, with current counts showing Moody 50.9 to Nixon 48 percent. The race followed Marco Rubio’s 2025 resignation and Moody’s appointment by Gov. Ron DeSantis. Nixon won last-minute endorsements from Barack Obama, Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez campaigned with her. Nixon ran as a Democratic Socialists of America and Working Families Party-aligned candidate on an unabashedly pro-worker, anti-establishment platform. National Democratic groups largely withheld funding: the Senate Majority PAC and the DSCC did not spend on Nixon, while those groups spent tens of millions on other Senate contests (examples include $87.4 million for Sherrod Brown in Ohio and $46.5 million for Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan). Political scientist Sharon D. Wright Austin said Nixon’s experience raises questions about whether the Democratic Party provides enough support for Black women running long-shot races. Nixon’s decision to run again sets up another contest with Moody and keeps Florida’s Senate landscape competitive going forward.
