John D. "Jay" Rockefeller IV, an heir to a vast oil fortune who became a liberal Democratic leader in West Virginia, died Friday at his home in Washington, D.C. He was 89; his family did not provide a cause. Rockefeller served as West Virginia governor and then as a five-term U.S. senator, spending 30 years in the Senate and roughly a half century in public service in one of the nation’s poorest states. In the Senate he was a leading voice on health care, tax reform, social welfare and national security and helped extend health insurance to millions of low-income Americans. As governor he prioritized development of state infrastructure such as roads, sewers and bridges. Colleagues and outlets note his long record defending society’s most vulnerable and his role advancing consumer protections and online privacy.
