With about 96% of returns posted, Democrat Scott Colom leads Republican incumbent Cindy Hyde-Smith by roughly 2,010 votes in Mississippi’s U.S. Senate race, and affidavit ballots in North Mississippi are overperforming for Colom, the Mississippi Free Press reports. In Alcorn County 172 affidavit ballots were cast and 126 accepted; Hyde-Smith got 75 affidavit votes (60.5%) to Colom’s 44 (35.5%), a much narrower margin than her 75.5%, 22.7% lead in the county overall, giving Colom a net +31 from those affidavits. In Chickasaw County 204 affidavits were cast and 105 accepted; Colom won 81 affidavit votes (77.1%) to Hyde-Smith’s 23 (21.9%) and netted +58 from that batch. In Itawamba County 324 affidavits were cast and 214 accepted; Hyde-Smith received 151 affidavit votes (70.9%) to Colom’s 53 (24.9%), but Colom still reduced her margin and Hyde-Smith netted +98 there. Rejection rates reported were 26.7% in Alcorn, 48.5% in Chickasaw and 34% in Itawamba; other North Mississippi counties are still finalizing or have not reported affidavit totals. Both campaigns say they remain confident in victory, but Hyde-Smith would need substantial gains from outstanding ballots for the result to flip; some counties, including Clay, plan to count affidavit ballots between November 10 and 12, meaning remaining affidavit counts could still affect the final margin.
