NCAA to expand men's and women's tournaments to 76 teams

ESPN reports the NCAA has begun final steps to expand both the men's and women's Division I basketball tournaments to 76 teams. The change raises each field from 68 to 76 teams, adding eight berths per bracket, and ESPN says it is expected to begin in 2027. The move will create extra opening-round play-in games or alter first-round byes and will reduce the number of at-large slots available to bubble teams. It expands access for small-conference champions, including historically Black colleges and universities, while reshaping bracket math, selection stakes, and TV scheduling.
