Labour MP Catherine West vows to challenge Keir Starmer if others don't

politicsMay 10, 202636993

Labour MP Catherine West said she will trigger a leadership contest by Monday unless colleagues move to remove Prime Minister Keir Starmer. West told colleagues she has the backing of about 10 MPs, well short of the 81 nominations required to force a formal leadership challenge. Her move follows Labour losses in recent Scottish, Welsh and English elections and presses the party to resolve leadership questions before the next electoral tests.

Hornsey and Friern Barnet Labour MP Catherine West tells the BBC she’ll challenge Starmer on Monday if the cabinet doesn’t move against him. Bizarre claim. She says she has ten backers. Under Labour rules she needs 81.

Allies of Andy Burnham are trying to convince West to drop her bid, The Telegraph reports. Makes sense. It would instantly cut him out.

Some people truly have a death wish for Labour. Some members just cannot cope with the ups and downs of being in power. They push the self-destruct button in place of a cool head and reasoned options at the first sign of any trouble. I guess she just wants some attention. *sigh*

Dr Duncan Robertson20

Isn't the point that she wants *someone else* to get 81 names and this is the catalyst for that.

The Salopian Popular Front are splitters!14

There's about a dozen cult Corbyn hangers on that would rather yell about the purity of socialism from the sidelines than actually be in power. It's these who get quoted as a source when the press say the whole party is against whatever. I wish they'd fuck off & join their mates in the greens!

Stuart11

She wants to be centre stage. While the election was awful, there's far too much hand-wringing considering it's local elections and largely a protest vote. Also, no UK PM has ever resigned over poor local elections.

Ally Mac11

All this panicking is very naive ,a change won't fix anything and its the very thing that brought the Tories to their knees..

Jon10

And she was a Corbynite, so all her mates are now in the Greens.

MrMirth10

This is Telegraph sh*t stirring. I'm not paying any attention to the news media now. It's degenerated into vile circus.

Lunabelle5

Seems to be a nista. Anyway, she needs to multiply her mates by around 10 and still we've never heard of her. At a guess I'd say Trickett and Burgon are behind her cos they're both chuntering, although as ever it's all they do.

Every few days it's wash, rinse repeat with all these Starmer must go stories. This has been happening since Keir entered No10 in July 2025. First MSM took down several strong female MP's doing great jobs in their ministerial roles over ridiculous so called scandals.

Mark Monro | He/Him 🌈5

Sadly, she now needs to find another 71 people within the PLP who've ever heard of her.

Mrs. G4

These petty egotists need to sit down and shut up. A leadership change right now will make Labour look knee-jerk scared and desperate, and more concerned with themselves than with the state of the country.

Alyx AKA Mr Rambler4

Never even heard of her. What a buffoon

LongdogOwner4

A moment in the sun, pointless endeavour.

Patrick - Here for the craic❗️😁 👍🏼3

She’s bonkers Next stop reform for her, I think

MizT3

I don't think Miz West is a fan of loyalty, duty & commitment.....

Nigel Stead3

I think Keir has brought back Gordon Brown to strengthen his position, not really for Brown to achieve anything tangible. He’s saying, you move against me, you move against Brown and Harman too.

John Rob3

Maybe she's hoping a few more backbenchers will break cover? Regardless. Her actions will drop nicely into Bad enoch's lap. It really is a stupid knee jerk reaction. Particularly as it's going to be the King's speech and then all the backbenchers can decide if to stick or twist straight after.

Lavajackal2

An attempt to set the race off I guess?

Oldnfat57052

Total bloody stupidity. Circle the bloody wagons. Push on with the agenda. Do not open the doors for any opposition.

Jo 🕊️2

Idiotic move. And very naive.

Gerri McGerriface2

I’ve never even heard of her, is she secretly working for Reform? 🧐

Chris Bryan2

Looks like Reform isn't the only party that needs to improve it's vetting!

Lucy Abbotts 2

My (excellent) MP before the boundaries were redrawn; a hero during the efforts to hold Boris Johnson’s feet to the fire; this is a truly peculiar way to sabotage a fairly flawless record.

BREAKING Labour MP Catherine West says that if cabinet has not removed Keir Starmer by Monday she’ll challenge him for the leadership. She tells Radio 4's PM she already has 10 backers and is confident she’d get more www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/c1...

If she is not removed from the Labour Party by Monday... There are wars going on impacting us, a madman in the White House and a racist trying to get his Nazi party elected into No. 10 and this woman deliberately tries to destabilise her own young Government. Boot her in to obscurity.

AlMed13

Here we go again with the ‘change the leader and everything’s fixed’ rhetoric, as if the UK’s problems were that simple. It’s the same logic behind ‘Stopping the Boats’, as though that alone will fix potholes, repair the NHS, build homes, expand dental access, and eliminate child poverty.🤦🏻‍♂️

pennyrose.bsky.social8

Silly woman! She clearly doesn’t have the best interest of this country at heart. Last thing we need is any more of upheaval.

James6

I'm glad somebody's willing to be the stalking horse. Cabinet really should have forced Starmer to resign rather than let it come to something that's going to be messy.

Emily Giles5

This kind of reactionary politics is giving Reform exactly what they’re looking for and how we’ll end up with them in government. There is no leader in waiting who can unite the party, or who will face less pressure or scrutiny because the media and opposition will maintain their modus operandi.

Peter Rowley5

No fan of Starmer. But do Labour MPs really think that they can overthrow him and the massed hordes of political journalists will quietly accept this, or will they throw their weight behind the fabricated need for a general election now to get Nige in? I can hear Kuenssberg already.....

plasmatin.bsky.social4

Right, I literally don't know who he is. I'm not being stupid or anything, but I physically don't know who Catherine West is. She could be the leader of the Special Boat Squadron – The Special Boat Service or whatever it's fucking called, and this could be a massive coup.

Tim Spanner3

Catherine what sorry come again?

Laurette 💙🇨🇦🇲🇽🇪🇺🇺🇦🐸2

I imagine the cabinet is shaking in their boots. Is she looking for an invite to Laura Keunssberg’s show tomorrow ‘cos I’m sure Laura would oblige once she stops salivating.
