Apple rolls out beta end‑to‑end encrypted RCS in IOS 26.5

techMay 11, 20262547

Apple has begun a beta rollout in IOS 26.5 that enables end-to-end encrypted RCS for some iPhone-to-Android chats, requiring IOS 26.5 on iPhones, Google Messages on Android, and participating carriers. When encryption is active, Messages shows a lock icon and an Encrypted label, and Apple says neither Apple nor Google can access the contents of those RCS conversations. Apple lists encrypted RCS as a beta feature, so availability and reliability will be uneven while the company and carriers complete testing and deployment. This closes a long-standing privacy gap by protecting cross-platform chats and could change how sensitive conversations are handled between iPhones and Android devices.
